For many years, Phuket has been incredibly famous among tourists across the globe. Millions of people pay a visit to this island each year. That being said, many things have been changed to make it relevant and convenient for travelers. Because they expanded the infrastructure of the province, Phuket can welcome even more visitors throughout the year.

The tourism industry generates a lot of money in Thailand. But while it may seem like Phuket is doing really well, there are some downsides to this as well. The dark side of tourism on the island is partially a responsibility of the visitors. If you want to be a mindful tourist, there are some things that you need to be aware of. Here are some tips on how to travel in Phuket without damaging the island or making its situation worse:

Say ‘no’ to plastic

Plastic pollution has been a big issue in Thailand for a long time. In fact, this is one of the most critical problems in Southeast Asian countries. Nature has been deteriorating because of these single-use plastic bags and other items made of plastic. Most of them end up floating in the sea and causing problems for different forms of marine life. Many sea animals have been affected by plastic pollution. Some of them were lucky enough to be rescued while others weren’t as lucky. Many sea creatures have died due to plastic bags. It’s important for you to cut down on using such bags to be kind to the ecosystem.

Although you are just a tourist, being mindful can go a long way towards helping Thailand. When you buy something at a convenience store, do not forget to tell them that you don’t want a plastic bag. Instead, bring your own reusable bag to put your purchases in. Nowadays, 7-11 has been active in promoting the use of such bags. This is something that you should support.

Bring your own water bottle

Because of the heat and humidity in Phuket, there is no way that you can live without drinking water frequently. Buying water is convenient, but it creates plastic waste on the island. This is why you should bring a reusable bottle along with you everywhere you go. As you walk around Phuket, there are many water dispensers where you can get a refill. Keep in mind that these machines do not take bills. Try to keep some coins with you in the event that you want to refill your reusable bottle. If you do not find any water dispensers, ask the hotel if you can get filtered water. This may seem like a small act, but it actually helps the environment quite a bit!

Do not support animal abuse

Phuket has many elephant camps that let people have fun with them. Before you sign up, however, you should know that some of these camps abuse and starve the elephants. They use these animals as tools to make money. If you pay them, you are indirectly supporting animal abuse. It is crucial for you to be aware of this. Since many businesses have elephants involved, it can be difficult for you to distinguish the good and bad. The best way to do so is to look at the list of activities an elephant camp offers. If elephant riding is one of them, stay away! Instead, go for the sanctuaries that let you shower and feed elephants. Support the kind people who actually help these poor animals, not the greedy ones who take advantage of them.
